Casa Jagoda Buić

Casa Jagoda Buić is the first venue of the Dr. Hans Wuttke Foundation, whose opening was timed to coincide with the Biennale Arte 2026. The house was home to Croatian artist Jagoda Buić (1930–2022) and her husband, the German banker Dr. Hans Wuttke (1923–2000), who lived here together as part of a life shaped by movement between cities and cultures. This year, the Foundation has opened to the public the ground floor and garden with two inaugural exhibitions: one dedicated to Jagoda Buić herself, the other presenting new work by multimedia artist Lala Raščić.

The exhibitons

The exhibitions run in parallel and are conceived as a conversation across generations, bringing together Jagoda Buić—Beyond Tapestry from the Foundation’s collection, and a newly commissioned work by artist Lala Raščić—A SMILE, SMIRK, SNEER, SNICKER (or teeth as language)

Jagoda Buić was a central figure in the international fiber art movement. From the 1960s onward, she redefined tapestry as a sculptural and spatial medium, exhibiting at the Lausanne International Tapestry Biennials, the Bienal de São Paulo, and the Biennale Arte in Venice.

Beyond Tapestry presents a cross-section of Jagoda Buić’s work from the Dr. Hans Wuttke Foundation collection, accompanied by archival video documentation. Conceived as a series of “snapshots,” it traces her artistic development across her studios in Zagreb, Dubrovnik, and Bonnieux.

As an homage – yet in her own artistic language – invited artist Lala Raščić engages with Buić’s work, Black Leafing (1978), made for the Electric Utility of Bosnia and Herzegovina in her hometown, Sarajevo, translating its relief structures into patterns on glass within a multisensory, lumino-kinetic installation of verre églomisé elements that evoke the ambiguity of the Gorgoneion smile.
